Gravesend residents have witnessed the first narrow boat to grace their canal in 80 years.
The Thames and Medway Canal Association held an open day at Mark Lane Slipway in Gravesend on March 29 to celebrate the opening of the canal's swing bridge and launch a 26 foot long narrow boat onto the water.
Mayor of Gravesham, Coun John Caller cuts the ribbon
The canal runs from Gravesend to Higham.
Mayor of Gravesham Councillor John Caller officially opened the swing bridge before launching the boat.
Chairman of the canal association, David Rouse said: "For the first time in many, many years, for decades, we launched a boat onto the canal.
"We have had rowing boats and canoes but not a narrow boat.
"Around 50 people came to watch which we were very pleased with as the weather being was so bad.
"We have had a lot of support from the council and the public for many years."
The association hold a working group on the canal every Tuesday. For more information call Mr Rouse on: 01474 362861
