The Mayor of Greenwich has learnt how he could save £600 on his energy bills thanks to a pop up energy advice cafe.

Having already given free support to more than 150 households in a  month, organisers of the cafe at The Forum at Greenwich Community Centre - South East London Community Energy (SELCE) - advised Councillor Mick Hayes about his electricity and gas.

According to government figures, there are 8,000 fuel poor households in Greenwich and a similar number in Lewisham - equating to around 8 per cent of the total.

A household is considered fuel poor if the cost of maintaining an adequate temperature would leaves them below the official poverty line.

The group are in discussions to run a monthly energy cafe at the Woolwich Common Community Centre and are raising money to install solar panels on the roofs of Mulgrave, Charlton Park, Ashmead and Horniman primary schools.

SELCE director Alex Hartley said: "We hope to find a permanent home for the cafe so we can support more people."
