There was yet more rush-hour chaos at London Bridge station last night, on the day new measures were meant to start easing commuter congestion.

Services were affected by signal failures between 4.30pm and 5.30pm but the knock-on effect was trains were delayed into the evening.

The station is undergoing extensive long-running engineering work which has led to major congestion, including one occasion when police were called to keep order.

Network Rail had written to rail minister Claire Perry saying that from yesterday new measures would be brought in to improve the rush-hour situation.

They include more rapid-response engineering teams, a central control point for all London stations like that used during the 2012 Olympics, more highly visible customer service staff and having some trains stop at fewer outlying stations to help with punctuality.

Last week the Rail, Maritime and Transport union said station staff had been threatened, had hot coffee thrown over them and been spat at by passengers caught up in delays and overcrowding.
