Weightlifting Olympic athlete Zoe Smith was among a host of people honoured at the Greenwich Civic Awards ceremony this month.

Now in its third year, Greenwich Council hosted the awards to recognise the work of unsung heroes in the borough.

The coveted awards are presented to individuals and organisations who have made exceptional contributions.

Over 100 nominations were submitted for the 11 awards categories, presented jointly by Mayor of Greenwich Councillor Mick Hayes and council leader Councillor  Denise Hyland.

Coun Hyland said: "The Civic Awards provide a unique opportunity to recognise the individuals and organisations that work so hard to make Royal Greenwich a fantastic place to live, work and visit."

Celebrating their home-grown Olympic athlete, Zoe Smith won the Mayor's Special Award for promoting sport in Greenwich and for her work with the Greenwich Starting Blocks Trust.

Competing for Team GB at the London 2012 Olympics, Ms Smith set a new British record in weightlifting for the clean-and-jerk. She also won a silver medal at the Australian Youth Olympic Festival in Sydney.

A Contribution to the Community Award went to Terry Powley, Chair of the Greenwich Parks Forum, who said: "I feel honoured to receive this Civic Award.

"I see it as a recognition of the dedicated work that the Greenwich Parks Forum and all the individual Friends of Parks groups put into helping to safeguard the future of Greenwich's much-valued parks and open spaces."

For his contribution to culture and the arts, Ewan Hooper was awarded for establishing the Greenwich Young People's Theatre, The Tramshed and Greenwich Theatre.

And Greenwich Talking Newspaper Association won an award for their efforts to public service in Greenwich, recording local news every week for 27 years.

Janet Green was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award for more than 20 years of working with the Greenwich Association of Disabled People (GADP). Begun in 1975, GADP was one of the first centres for independent living established in the UK.
