A Lewisham man says he saved so much money by quitting smoking he could afford his dream car -  a Porsche Cayenne.

Pocketing the money saved from kicking the habit, Stephen Mortimer, 56, from Connington Road is the proud new owner of the flash car.

A near-lifelong smoker, Mr Mortimer had unsuccessfully tried to stop smoking 30 years ago with the aid of hypnosis sessions.

But a second attempt proved more successful with Lewisham Stop Smoking Service for Mr Mortimer.

Making use of the service's practical advice, support groups, nicotine replacement medication and weekly carbon monoxide tests, he was able to quit smoking for good.

Mr Mortimer said: "I used to spend £100 a week on cigarettes without even noticing, so when I did the sums and realised what I could get for that amount of money, I was quite surprised."

"I can’t thank the Lewisham Stop Smoking Service enough for all their support. The amount of options they offer to help you quit means that you are bound to find something that works for you.

Mr Mortimer added: "I feel so much healthier as well. I’m not coughing and wheezing anymore, and I have a lot more stamina."

Lewisham Stop Smoking Service offers access to trained advisors to guide through the quitting process, regular sessions for motivation in the first few weeks, and progress health checks for cigarette-quitters.

Stop Smoking Advisor Matt Seal said: "It is amazing that Stephen has managed to purchase a Porsche with his cigarette money savings – but it just shows how limiting cigarettes are, both financially and in terms of your health."
