Bar The Beckenham made a shock announcement that it is to close in less than a week.

The venue, along Beckenham High Street, has been open for five years but this Saturday (March 7) is to be its last night.

Yesterday (March 2) they posted a message on social media saying: "After 5 years, many a late night and being the cause of several (thousand) hangovers, we will be filling the dance floor for the final time this Saturday.

"It's been an amazing ride but we are looking forward to our next journey.

"We hope to see you all for a drink or two this weekend to see her off in true Beckenham style."

Spokesman for the bar Joy Zarine said: "A decision has been made to close the venue and we will not be relocating to another part of town.

"Being part of the Beckenham community has been wonderful and we would like to thank everyone for all their support over the years, serving our guests in Beckenham has genuinely been a pleasure.

“We're sad to be saying goodbye to The Beckenham.

“We are so happy to consider many of guests as friends and we look forward to seeing many familiar faces this week before our final shift on Saturday.”

It is unclear what propelled the decision to leave so suddenly, or what will take over the venue.

The move has been met with sadness from revellers, with some taking to twitter to express their sadness.

General Manager Tony Adams, who was once crowned the World Champion bartender at a contest in Las Vegas, has worked there for nearly four years.

He said: "We’ve had ups and downs over the years, but it’s been amazing.

“So much has happened over the years quite cool to look back today.

“Obviously I’m very very sad the Beckenham’s not going to be around anymore. I’ve got fond memories.

“It’s all a bit of a blur. Personally, it’s been amazing.

“I’ll remember the Beckenham for some great nights out, not just the people but particularly the staff.

"I’ll miss the place very much.”

He added there may be an announcement next week over what will take its place, hinting at a refurbishment to bring some ‘very different and very exciting planned for the future’.
