Charlton have revealed the truth behind a viral video which appeared to show a couple having sex in The Valley's centre circle.

The romp - which prompted plenty of jokes about Charlton's scoring ability - was actually a publicity stunt by the club to promote a new pitch hire service.

Charlton's Commercial Manager Mark Hassan-Ali explained: "We wanted to launch our pitch hire programme with a viral that would make football fans laugh.  We released some ‘CCTV’ footage earlier in the week of a young couple on the pitch in a rather amorous situation.

"We then decided to own up and explain that it was set up by us to launch our pitch hire campaign.  The feedback has been great and we can confirm that the young couple will be attending our next home match.

"This activity shows that The Valley is multi-functional and more than a football stadium."

Charlton is making 112 two-and-a-half hour pitch slots available to book in May, allowing people to play 11-a-side or split the pitch into two for smaller games.

Mr Hassan-Ali said: "Whether it’s a work tournament, stag do, or just a kick-about with your friends, this is a fantastic opportunity to score on one of the finest pitches in the country."
