A fire alarm has gone off in a BBC building forcing radio hosts to abandon their shows and evacuate the area.

A news reader on music station Radio 6 cut short her bulletin at around 7.30am and told baffled hosts, "we're having to leave the building now".

Radio 2 Chris Evans mentioned a situation before leaving and the station then played an emergency tape.

It is believed there are a number of fire engines around the BBC building at Western House, Great Portland Steet in central London.

"Evans tweeted from his account, @achrisevans: "Radio 2 fire alarm activated, amber for a while during show. Turned to red, mandatory immediate evacuation implemented. Cold out here.

"Wow. Fire alarm equals two thousand new followers in ten mins. May be the way forward.

"Currently working on proposal for fire alarm evacuation muster point to be relocated to The Hat & Stick. Pub rather than a random pavement."

Shortly before 8am he revealed the situation had been resolved: "Scrap that.

"We were in the lift to Radio One.

"Now been notified we can re occupy Radio 2. Woohoo. Bring on the guests."
