A brave Dartford mum has revealed how she fought a burglar who threatened to shoot her 10-year-old daughter in her own home.

Julia Rogers, 47, was sleeping in her home in Mill Road, Hawley on May 11 last year when the intruder dragged daughter Lily into her mother’s bedroom at 5.30am, claiming he was holding a gun to her back and demanding the keys to a safe.

The courageous mum punched him in the face and dragged him downstairs and out of the house.

Despite Mrs Rogers bravery the intruder returned, threatening to kill her, Lily and 18-year-old son, Danny - who was also in the house.

After refusing to give-in to the harrowing threats, the man fled but was tracked down by police and is now serving a 10-year prison sentence.

Mrs Rogers and her daughter were both recognised for their bravery and were awarded the Chief Constable’s commendation at a Kent Police ceremony on February 17.

Chief Constable Alan Pughsley said: "The courage demonstrated by Mrs Rogers and Lily under such terrifying circumstances was exceptional.

"No-one should have to endure what they did, and they should feel proud of themselves for how they handled the situation. This commendation formally marks their bravery and fortitude."

Police officers, civilian staff and members of the public were among more than 50 people who received a Chief Constable’s commendation or certificate of merit at the ceremony.
