Greenwich's National Maritime Museum is set to get nearly £5m to create four new permanent galleries.

The Endeavour Galleries, being set up over the next three years will look at Pacific exploration, polar exploration, Tudor and Stuart seafarers plus one room showcasing the richness of the museum’s collections.

Managers Royal Museums Greenwich say the project will provide an extra 40 per cent of gallery space, allowing them to exhibit another 1,000 artefacts .

In all, the development will cost £11.9m with £4.98m due to come from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

It is set to be completed in mid 2018, allowing the museum to take a lead role in Cook 250 - the commemoration of Lieutenant James Cook’s departure from nearby Deptford in HM Bark Endeavour on the first of his three voyages of exploration to the Pacific.
