Choose a fridge with a high energy-efficiency rating - and position it away from heat sources such as cookers, ovens, dishwashers or radiators.
A fridge placed next to a heat source takes up to 15 per cent more energy to run. Do not over chill a fridge as it uses more energy and try not to leave the door open unnecessarily, as the cold air will escape and make the appliance work harder to keep things cool.
Energy is also wasted by putting hot food in the fridge - allow it to cool first. It doesn't take much effort and can make a big difference.
