Remember his face, because you could be seeing this lad from Orpington on screens near you soon.

Twenty-four-year-old actor Josh Hawkins is making moves Stateside with a handful of short films under his belt and big auditions streaming in.

The former Darrick Wood schoolboy is working on a web TV series for Amazon and next week has a screen test in LA for a new series on giant American network CBS.

Josh said: “I went back (to Orpington) in June for my sister’s birthday and I looked around and thought ‘wow, it’s crazy how far I’ve come in three years’.”

The actor grew up in Walnuts Road, Orpington, and also lived around Bromley, Grove Park and Mottingham.

He said: “It was kind of a difficult upbringing because being a mixed race or black in a predominantly white area, I got a bit of stick from some of the boys there.”

“I played football a lot and minded my own business. I feel like I couldn’t be where I am now if I wasn’t there because the style of acting I use – method acting – is basically drawing emotions from your personal life and being able to inject them into your character to tell the truth within your acting.”

Aged 20, Josh got a job at Hollister where he was picked up by a modelling agency. Through a girlfriend at the time, he ended up in Toronto where he was offered more modelling work.

Campaigns included for Nike, Ugg and French Connection.

It was while he was in Canada that he first dabbled properly in acting.

He said: ““There was something, but I couldn’t quite figure out what, that I wanted to do. A friend of mine said I should try this acting class.

“I went to the class and I was like ‘wow, this is what I want to do for the rest of my life’. Everything ignited.”

Josh came back to London with his savings and set his sights on study at The Lee Strasberg Theatre and Film School in New York, the prestigious centre which has turned out talent such as Jon Voight, Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson and Marilyn Monroe.

It took several Skype auditions and interviews before he was accepted and then it took all of his savings.

Now he is based in New York and has two short films to his name with another couple in progress and he has his sights set on TV work before graduating onto big films.

He said: “I want to be able to work with the best people in my industry, so that’s where I’m aiming.”
