The Barclays in Crayford is closing on Friday (Feb 13) leaving the centre of the town without a single bank or ATM.

Residents were horrified when News Shop revealed the news of the closure last November.

Joan Miles, 78, has walked the 500m to the bank from her home in Crayford Way, where she has lived for 50 years, twice each week.

She told News Shopper when news of the closure broke: "I have been with Barclays from the word go and this is the thanks I get."

Bexleyheath and Crayford MP David Evennett also revealed his dismay over the closure.

Barclays has run the branch in Crayford Road since 1968 but say a decline in use is behind the decision.

A spokesman told News Shopper in November: "At Barclays in Crayford customer usage has declined by 37 per cent and around 75 per cent of customers regularly use alternative branches, which is why we have taken the difficult decision to close the branch.

"Our colleagues at the store have been consulted about the changes and will transfer to other branches nearby."
