A grandmother of 12 from Biggin Hill has won an award for being neighbourly.

Hazel Diner, 69, clinched the Best Neighbour award as part of the Happy Living Awards.

The awards, launched in May, were sponsored by housing provider Anchor.

There were six categories in total; Green Fingered Customer, Best Neighbour, Silver Surfer, Best Grandparent, Community Champion and Carer of the Year.

She beat off 600 nominations to win her award after she was nominated by manager Michelle Smith.

Ms Diner, who lives at Tudor Court in Biggin Hill, said: "I'm over the moon to have won. It means a great deal that everybody voted for me.

"It is very important to have good neighbours, so it’s lovely to hear that I am making people happy.

"I like to help others, whether it is simply to be there with a cup of tea at a difficult time or to go out for the day and do something fun."

The great-grandmother of three added: "I had no idea until it came through the post - I didn't know anything about it!"

Ms Smith said: "Hazel arranges so many social events - coffee mornings twice a week, special dinners, afternoon Pimms in the garden, cream teas, day trips to the coast and local places of interest, dog racing, horse racing… I could go on!

"Other tenants have told me how much this means to them, and I can see how the quality of life has improved for people who were previously quite shy or lonely. Hazel gives her time so freely and generously."

Ms Diner, who has lived at Tudor Court for four years, received her award last week.
