A Deptford school recently ranked the best state primary in the country has had its exam results annulled after concerns over "irregularities".

Last year, Grinling Gibbons was ranked fourth in the Sunday Times Parent Power league table - the highest ever ranking for a state primary on the list - and its head teacher Cynthia Eubank received high praise for the school's 2013 Sats results. She was even made an OBE in the New Year's Honours list last year.

But government watchdog the Standards and Testing Agency announced in December that it was investigating the school's key stage 2 results for 2014 due to concerns over accuracy.

And, following that investigation, the Department for Education has now confirmed that all results for maths, grammar, punctuation and spelling have been annulled.

A Standards and Testing Agency spokesman said: "Following an investigation into the administration of 2014 Key Stage 2 tests at Grinling Gibbons Primary School, a decision was made to annul a number of the tests.

“Any instances of maladministration of the tests are completely unacceptable.”

A spokesman for Lewisham Council insisted the quality of education at the school was still "of a very high standard" and it would be launching its own investigation.

They said: " The Standards and Testing Agency has identified irregularities in a small number of test papers and this is, of course, a significant concern. Now that the agency has completed its investigation, we can and will now conduct our own review of the school's test administration practice to assure ourselves that proper procedures are in place.

"At the beginning of the school year, to make up for the lack of information from the tests, the school provided secondary schools with children's work and moderated assessment  information from teachers to ensure that  pupils are sufficiently challenged and progressing in their secondary education."
