A charity-run Chislehurst care home is to shut forcing women as old as 100 to find somewhere else to live.

Queen Mary House, in Manor Park Road, is to close after a struggle to fill room vacancies.

The home, which has 36 rooms for elderly women with 24-hour onsite staff, is run by the School Mistresses and Governesses Benevolent Institution.

Sundridge Park 93-year-old resident Doris has lived at Queen Mary House for three-and-a-half years.

Her 65-year-old daughter Ann, of Lodge Road, told News Shopper: "To move these 21 residents at this stage - it will cause some of them to die and I just hope my mum isn’t one of them.

"Moving is stressful at any age but when you are in your 90s it’s particularly hard.

"I am really staggered, absolutely in distress and wanting to do the best for my mother."

Ms Blackburn fears she will struggle to find somewhere else for her mum, a former school secretary, to live.

She added: "There is going to be a huge rush for the beds elsewhere."

Last week, News Shopper reported the possible closure of Orpington elderly care home Lubbock House, which is run by Affinity Sutton in partnership with Bromley Council.

Queen Mary House was originally dedicated to providing a comfortable place to live for retired women who worked in private education but had fallen upon difficult times.

The home eventually expanded to cater for women from all backgrounds.

Sarah Brydon, director and secretary of the Governesses and Benevolent Institution, said: "Few residents qualify as beneficiaries of the charity and Queen Mary House, and it now finds itself providing accommodation at near commercial rates, largely to those from other backgrounds.

"This is not what the funds were originally intended for, and we as a charity are in possible breach of our legal responsibilities."

Ms Brydon said the home’s closure, planned for no later than June this year, would allow the charity to refocus the funds for the original purposes.

She added the charity’s first priority would be to support residents and their families and assist with finding alternative homes.
