Youngsters across Bromley can take on new challenges with the launch of a Children's University.

Bromley College is the latest institution to become part of the national scheme which promotes learning outside of school.

Aimed at children aged seven to 14, around 20 schools in the borough have already signed up.

Children are given a 'passport to learning' upon entering the international scheme.

Gillian Hughes, the Children's University co-ordinator for Orpington's Perry Hall School said: "We think it's really important that we see the whole of the child not just the academic aspects.

"Now they will get to find out other activities, and it allows children to take responsibility for their learning."

With Thai Boxing already accredited, she said they were looking at rolling it out to other clubs in the near future.

Numerous activity centres, including after-school clubs, will be able to credit children's passports with stamps.

Awarded per hour of an activity, 100 hours equals a bronze certificate, 200 silver, 300 gold, 400 is equivalent of a BA and 1,000 a PhD.

Launching in September last year, Bromley College already has 400 children signed up.

Youngsters from Perry Hall with their passports

With each university having its own chancellor, author Martina Cole has been invited to step into the role for Bromley.

Ms Cole said: "It's just something really fabulous to be a part of. I really like getting the passport stamped; it gives them something to work towards.

"It gets children out learning, and mixing and socialising with other children.

"I don't know what I would have done without a library when I was younger, over the years so many things have closed down."

Each learning destination - ranging from museums, theatres, sports clubs, and libraries - must first be validated by Bromley's Children's University.

Nigel Morgan, dean of higher education at Bromley College, said: "We were aware of the children’s university and realised there wasn't one representing the borough of Bromley.

"Children can take their passport with them wherever they go to build up stamps, any site which is part of the Children's University. It can be absolutely anything, any activity.

"Engaging their interest now means they will go on taking learning seriously."
