Nearly 3,000 people have signed a petition calling for a military museum to remain in Woolwich.

Firepower, the Royal Artillery Museum, is set to leave Woolwich by 2017 and relocate to Salisbury Plan in Wiltshere.

Earlier this month, the chairman of Visit Wiltshire welcomed the move and said the county had "beaten off" competition from other areas.

Peter Wragg said: "This new attraction will be a fantastic boost in growing Wiltshire’s visitor economy."

But the news has left thousands of people in Greenwich borough disappointed. A petition urging the museum to stay open has been signed by 2,957 people so far.

It has also been claimed that the closure could see any celebrations for next year's 300th anniversary of the Royal Regiment of Artillery - formed in Woolwich in 1716 - moved out of the borough.

The Army has not responded to requests for comment.
