The Mayor of Lewisham joined members of the Goldsmiths community for a Holocaust Remembrance Service.

The event, held in The Great Hall of the Richard Hoggart Building at Goldsmiths University, marked both the Holocaust Memorial Day and the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz.

Speeches were followed by a moving memorial prayer and then a minute's silence.

National Union of Jewish Students President, Ella Rose, said: "The Holocaust was a unique and unprecedented event in history, one that humanity has a duty to remember, and to pledge that this should never happen again."

Sir Steve noted that Holocaust Memorial Day is taken very seriously in Lewisham, which is one of the London boroughs chosen to receive a special candle this year to mark the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau by the Soviet Army in 1945.

He also referred to the recent service he attended for the victims of New Cross house fire in 1981 and noted that memorial services are attended by people who knew those who died, but are also important for those who did not know the victims.
