Rumours that there may be fracking under homes on an historic Eltham estate have been denied by two top politicians.

Residents of the 100-year-old Progress Estate were alarmed by a Friends of the Earth map showing it was on the edge of an area which might be considered for a fracking licence.

The controversial practice sees companies drill horizontally into the ground, using a high pressure mixture to extract shale gas.

And the Infrastructure Bill currently going through Parliament could allow them to drill beneath people's homes.

But Eltham MP Clive Efford has written to residents, saying he can see no circumstances in which he would ever agree to fracking in Eltham or Plumstead.

And Councillor Spencer Drury, who is running against Mr Efford in the upcoming election, has published a response from Greenwich Council which says there is no evidence that fracking will take place in Eltham or elsewhere in the borough.
