A St Mary Cray mother threatened court action after numerous kitchen cupboards fell off the wall injuring her family.

A family is facing an ongoing housing hassle after their letting agent reportedly refused to repair their badly damaged kitchen for over four and half months.

Leigh-Ann Millan, 27, lives in Amherst Drive with partner, Chris Newman, 31, and her seven-year-old son who she does not wish to be named.

The day after they moved in in August last year, her Mr Newman was hit by a kitchen cupboard falling on him.

She now fears that her home is unsafe for her young son, who was almost hit by a different cupboard falling off the wall a week later.

Ms Millan said: "My partner has a condition which is a type of arthritis, when the cupboard fell on him, it bruised his shoulders and has made the condition worse.

"We phoned Affinity Sutton up the day after we moved in."

She expressed concern over the safety of her young son - who has learning disabilities - being in such an environment.

The aftermath in the kitchen

Affinity Sutton, the housing association which they rent from, had reportedly previously disregarded their constant attempts to contact someone to repair their kitchen.

They only initially responded after the family threatened to take them to court, Ms Millan claims, but said despite this: “I’m not getting answers”.

Four and a half months later, the family said they still not being given a straight answer on when Affinity Sutton were scheduled to do something about the state of the kitchen.

Ms Millan added: “They’ve refused to give us an explanation as to why they’re not arranging to repair our kitchen.”

A spokesman for Affinity Sutton said: “We are in communication with the residents regarding their kitchen units and understand the inconvenience that this is causing.

“Our maintenance contractor has advised that while the units require replacing, they do not pose a health and safety risk and the repair is therefore not deemed urgent.

“The replacement kitchen will be included in our planned investment programme. We have made the residents aware of this and confirmed that should they have any further concerns or issues, they should let us know straight away.”
