Just the Job - recruitment consultant

Matching workers' skills to their ideal jobs can be rewarding. Matt French speaks to a consultant who is happy to work long hours to help her contractors.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Certified by the Recruitment & Employment Confederation.

PLACE OF WORK:

DP Connect, Holmesdale Road, Bromley.

HOURS:

Monday to Friday, 9am to 7pm, and I work at weekends and evenings when required.

EARNING POTENTIAL:

People usually enter the profession earning around £15,000 per year, plus commissions. The top earners can earn £100,000 to £120,000, including commissions, and usually enjoy benefits like a company car.

WHAT IS YOUR TYPICAL DAY LIKE?

I work in IT recruitment; including development, support, networking and communications, and I fill job vacancies nationally and internationally.

I spend four or five hours a day on the phone, and I have around 100 conversations. I do a lot of emailing as well.

Clients tell me their career aspirations and I do my best to fulfil their criteria.

I contact companies directly, but after 15 years in the sector businesses also come to me when they need IT professionals.

People management is important in my work. I speak to contractors regularly to make sure they are happy where they are or if they would like a change.

I also visit workplaces to do appraisals with managers and then meet my clients. This is important because contractors do not always get feedback about their work.

I am on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week, because sometimes people like to talk in the evenings and I like to be there for them. Occasionally I have to organise replacements if a contractor is ill.

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO BECOME A RECRUITMENT CONSULTANT?

When I was 16 I did a youth training scheme in recruitment and loved it. There was a recession at the time which meant there were less vacancies to fill.

That actually helped me because I learnt to cope through the tough times.

WHERE DO YOU WANT TO GO FROM HERE?

I am now a company director.

I will expand some of our key accounts and help the sales team to reach my level.

I enjoy my work and will never leave.
