A group of French travellers have moved on after they were ordered by magistrates to pack up and leave their camp in a Gravesend car park.

They left shortly before 1pm today (January 15).

Four caravans and several cars arrived at Parrock Street car park on Sunday (January 11) claiming to be heading to Birmingham but that one of their vehicles had a technical issue.

After they failed to call a mechanic, the group where given a notice by Gravesham Council to leave the site by Monday morning.

Gravesham Council then applied to Medway Magistrates Court for an order meaning the travellers had until 1pm today (January 15) to move on.

Meanwhile a further two caravans appeared in the car park this morning.

A council spokesman said earlier today: "If they don't abide by the order we can take action which will most likely involve bailiffs directed by the council, not the courts.

"There were only four caravans until this morning but there are now six.

"I don't know if that means that they are collecting together to move on or not, I can't say what it means."
