At least 70 accidents have occurred on a single Gravesend road in the last two years, according to newly released figures.

A News Shopper freedom of information request to Kent Police revealed there have been 68 incidents along Milton Road since November 2012.

The crashes have involved 94 casualties and the figures do not even include the death of 34-year-old Stela-Maria Hurmuzache-Anpohe, who was hit by a Mercedes and killed on November 15.

Mother-of-four Amelia Rayfield lives in Park Place, just off Milton Road, with her sons Axel, 11, and Connor, seven.

The care worker told News Shopper: "I’m not shocked because I’ve lived here for 14 years and the number of accidents is ridiculous.

"I’m surprised it’s not higher. How many people have got to die before something gets done?

"Obviously the zebra crossing is dangerous and I’m surprised there aren’t more accidents there.

"Cars ignore it and pedestrians just come out without looking."

The crashes have involved cars, bicycles, motorbikes, minibuses, public buses, lorries and coaches.

One serious incident on August 28, 2013 saw a pedestrian hit by a car outside number 45 Milton Road, causing broken ribs and a cut to the head.

The figures also do not include a man in his 20s being hit by a bus on November 27, and a hit and run incident involving two pedestrians just three days later.

Stefan Turner, 22, was working in the front garden of a house in Brunswick Walk when the crash occurred on November 30.

The plumbing and heating engineer, of Dogwood Close, Northfleet, said: "I am shocked by the numbers.

"I’m surprised that the council and the authorities haven’t done anything sooner as a lot of those could have been prevented.

"They need to enforce the speed limit or lower it from 30mph to 20mph.

"Some sort of barriers are needed to protect pedestrians down the stretch by the railway bridge so if someone loses control at least you have got some chance of surviving.

"On that pedestrian crossing by the off licence all you’ve got is a couple of poxy yellow lights that slightly flash which you’re not going to see in daylight."
