A mother of four from Abbey Wood has been given a one-year community order for being drunk in charge of a small child and assaulting a police officer.

Jodie Davies, 23, of Dahlia Road, pleaded guilty to being drunk in charge of a child under seven years old, assaulting a police officer and possessing cannabis.

Bexley Magistrates' Court heard police were alerted to the incident on November 13 when Davies was driven to Plumstead police station by a taxi driver who reported she had fallen asleep in the back of his car with the child in the backseat.

A statement from a police officer at the scene said Davies' "eyes were glazed over, her speech was slow and you could smell alcohol on her breath."

When told that she would need to be taken into custody, Davies said: "You can't f****** do this to me, let me out," and kicked the police officer in the stomach, causing her to be arrested for assault.

Police found a small amount of cannabis in Davies' possession.

Janet Lloyd, mitigating, explained Davies had been visiting her mother and was upset one of her children was being bullied.

She added: "She did not visit her mother with the intention of getting drunk.

"She took her eye off her glass which was being refilled and she thinks that it was when she went outside that the fresh air hit her."

The court was also told Davies had a bad childhood, but had had no incidents with the police since she gave birth to her first child at 17 and was receiving a number of benefits.

Davies will complete 120 hours of community service over the next 12 months and was ordered to pay court costs of £60.
