Greenwich Council's deputy leader has branded plans to demolish a listed building in Woolwich to make way for Crossrail "an act of pure vandalism".

Councillor John Fahy made the accusation ahead of an exhibition on Berkeley Homes' plans for a new square in the Royal Arsenal beside the new Crossrail station.

It would see Building 11 - a Grade II-listed former officers' quarters dating back to 1739 which is on English Heritage's at risk register - knocked down rather than being expensively restored, making way for taxi ranks.

But Coun Fahy said he was "horrified" by the proposals, tweeting: "Decision to demolish the Heritage Building in the arsenal is an act of pure vandalism. Leaving it neglected for years is shameful."

Berkeley Homes claims the building presents "long term risks" and its positioning limits the scope for development.

Chairman John Anderson said: "Berkeley Homes’ commitment to heritage and historic regeneration is evident throughout Royal Arsenal, where we have already restored 20 heritage buildings on site, creating one of London’s most exciting regeneration stories."

A decision on the plans will be taken at a later date.
