A Slade Green seven-year-old has set off on a "miracle" US trip to battle a brain tumour, thanks to a £180,000 public appeal.

Frankie-Rose Lea was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of August, and the growth in her brain has since tripled in size and spread to her spine.

Her family began a desperate appeal for £160,000 to fund a trip across the Atlantic so she could undergo specialist proton beam therapy to shrink the tumour.

Not only did they reach their target in four days, but the Leas have this morning jetted off to Oklahoma City after fears Frankie-Rose may have been too ill to travel, proved unfounded.

An operation on Wednesday to reduce a build-up of fluid on the Haberdashers’ Aske’s pupil’s brain was successful, meaning she did not have to wait the anticipated 10 days before flying.

Mum Michelle, 36, put the family’s terraced home in The Nursery, Slade Green, up for sale to raise funds before the donations started rolling in.

She told News Shopper: "All the signs are saying a miracle has been performed.

"The fact that we raised all that money in four days and that the surgery has worked makes me feel like someone’s telling me ‘get on with it’.

"If it wasn’t for the public and their support I wouldn’t have been able to be with my children at Christmas."

The GoFundMe page set up on November 11 has now received nearly £185,000 in donations.

Frankie-Rose is to undergo eight weeks of treatment at the ProCure Proton Therapy Center.

As well as parents Michelle and Sam, 34, she will have her brothers Alfie, 11, and five-year-old Freddie by her side throughout.

Michelle said: "She’s really excited. She was a bit scared at first, as her attitude is that it’s Christmas coming up and she doesn’t want to go anywhere else.

"But I’ve told her Christmas is all singing and all dancing in the US and that Arna and Elsa from Frozen are going to be there so she’s happy."
