Work to transform Swanley Library and Information Centre into the new Swanley Gateway has started.

The building was officially handed over to the contractors, Mears, on October 20 and their job, for the next six months, will be to transform it into Swanley Gateway.

Bryan Sweetland, KCC Cabinet Member for Commercial and Traded Services who has oversight of Gateways, said: “It is wonderful that work is now well under way and we’re a step closer to delivering the sustainable services and facilities that Swanley residents deserve.”

Tony Searles, the Leader of Swanley Town Council, added: “Swanley Gateway will be a one-stop shop for residents where they can find joined-up public and voluntary services with the added convenience of being in a town centre location.

"I’m looking forward to seeing the people of Swanley gain all the benefits that the transformation will bring.”

New facilities will include improved access to KCC services, including a refurbished library and direct access to Swanley Town Council, West Kent Housing Association, and Sevenoaks District Council services.

Other partners, such as Job Centre Plus, Citizens’ Advice Bureau and a range of voluntary organisations, will also be providing services.

Despite the building works, council services are still available at nearby temporary locations while the work takes place.

Library services continue at the The Junction (Swanley Community and Youth Centre) on St. Mary’s Road.

There is also a private room available for the registration of births and deaths.

Residents will also get the opportunity to put forward their suggestions to find a new name for the building in a competition being launched in November.

Kent County Council, Swanley Town Council and West Kent Housing Association are collaborating to deliver the project for the benefit of Swanley residents.
