A man who stole a treasured violin from his brother's Sidcup home has been ordered to undertake unpaid community work.

Anthony Matthews, aged 33 of Dulverton Road, New Eltham appeared before Bexley Magistrates yesterday (October 20) after pleading guilty to a charge of theft from Penhurst Avenue, Sidcup.

The court heard that Matthews had been employed to do building work at the house which was the home of his brother David and his girlfriend, Louise Hope.

During the time he was working there the couple noticed several items had gone missing including a violin valued at around £1,000.

The court was told Miss Hope, with the police, made enquiries as to the violin's whereabouts and it transpired it had been sold at Cash Converters in Sidcup High Street for £30.

Concluding the magistrate said: "Mr Matthews, it is quite sad when these occasions occur - there's anger, shame and bitterness within a family. But we have been given a very supportive letter from your brother so we think it's inappropriate for this court to be involved in the payment of compensation at this time.

"However we feel a Community Order of unpaid work for 60 hours would be the most appropriate course of action.

"This can be undertaken over a period of 12 months. We also order you to pay £85 costs and a £60 surcharge - both are to be paid within the next seven days."
