Up to 100 new homes could be built on a derelict NHS site in Orpington, it has been revealed.
NHS Property Services said today (Oct 15) it has commissioned plans for housing on Bassetts Campus in Broadwater Gardens and says it will submit an application to Bromley Council this month.
The site, which has been empty since November last year, is a former residential complex for people with learning difficulties.
Now it could be preserved and converted into flats in a development that would also see other buildings there demolished to accommodate more.
Under the plans, properties ranging from one-bedroom flats to four-bedroom family homes would be built alongside renovations to the main facility.
NHS Property Services’ head of planning and development Andrew Strange said: "We are seeking outline planning permission for up to 100 new homes so we can increase its value to developers, maximising the money we can bring back into the NHS to improve facilities for patients.
"Not only will the sale of Bassetts Campus benefit the NHS, it will also bring an empty site and a locally-important building back into use, as well as providing a number of homes to help toward London’s growing demand for housing."
Mr Strange added once the application is submitted, the site will be marketed to developers and the final details will then be in the hands of Bromley Council.
The proposals also include restoration to the site’s surroundings, with car parking, green spaces, and an improved habitat for wildlife all playing a part.
The service has called for local residents to air their views on the project and a drop in centre has been arranged at Orpington Village Hall on Wednesday October 22, between 2.30pm and 7.30pm.
News Shopper is awaiting artist's impressions of the project.
