Red, White and Blue Day On Friday 10th October St Matthew Academy traded in their usual uniform colours of gold and blue to celebrate and support Red, White and Blue Day, commemorating 100 years since the beginning of World War 1.

Red, White and Blue Day is jointly organised by ABF The Soldiers' Charity, The RAF Benevolent Fund and The Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity. Each of these three charities is responsible for the welfare of soldiers, sailors and airmen and their families.

Children and staff were invited to pay a donation to wear red, white, blue; over £900 was raised on the day. Lessons all had a WW1 theme and they included visits from staff dressed in authentic army uniforms; food technology recreated recipes from the era and PE lessons followed a 1914 theme. The Catering team excelled themselves serving samples from a war time menu whilst playing music from that period.

To top off a spectacular day, St Matthew Academy welcomed Trevor Poole and David Siggers from The Great War Society, who came to speak to the children about the life of a soldier during WW1. The stories that they told were brought to life in the Academy’s immersive room, where they outlined the harsh conditions that the soldiers faced and gave a poignant reminder of the many sacrifices that were made.
