A Bromley woman, who lost her son to cancer last year, has been nominated for the UK’s Inspiration Awards for Women.
Maria Thurston, whose son Ryan died of malignant melanoma in April 2013, has been recognised in the Inspirational Fundraiser category.
Ms Thurston, of Elmhurst Road, has been tirelessly raising money for the Royal Marsden Hospital where her son received treatment. She also set up a charity in her son’s memory Ryan Just Beat It.
The 49-year-old said: “I hope I have done my son proud. Instead of his death being a negative, I have tried to turn it into a positive.
“It would be amazing if I won. It would be a great achievement.”
The awards, hosted by Sky presenter Sarah-Jane Mee and former tennis player Andrew Castle, take place on Thursday (October 2) at Cadogan Hall in Chelsea.
