The fear of a terrorist attack has risen from 14th on the Direct Line Hopes and Fears Index six months ago to the fifth greatest fear for the next six months – making it the fastest-growing fear among Britons.

Almost a quarter (23 per cent) of Britons rank terrorism as one of their primary concerns.

Our greatest fear is for our health and the health of loved ones (46 per cent).

Other top fears include making ends meet (27 per cent), inflation and the standard of living (both 26 per cent).

Britons' top hopes for the next six months are an improved financial situation (43 per cent) and good health (43 per cent).

More than a third of us (36 per cent) are hoping to lose weight.
