A Lewisham woman who suffered a stroke following the removal of a brain tumour has managed to walk 50 steps.

Walking the longest distance since her stroke two years ago, Sue Roberts, of Woodyates Road, Lee, took part in the Stroke Association’s Step Out for Stroke charity walk at Manor House Gardens on September 14.

Mrs Roberts’ daughter and carer Gill Davies, a former teaching assistant said the 77-year-old underwent five brain operations after her stroke which also resulted in her being in intensive care.

She said: “Mum is so inspirational. She’s worked so hard to conquer stroke, and it’s really paid off. I took on the role as a carer after mum had her stroke, and I have been so proud to see her progress on her journey in recovery.”

Ms Davies added: “After her stroke she couldn't talk, walk or eat – it was terrifying to see her in this way. But thankfully our mum is so determined – she fought all the way through her recovery and whilst she’s still fighting today, she’s come such a long way already.”

Rachel Morrison, communication support coordinator for the Stroke Association, said Mrs Roberts attends her support group weekly.

She said: “Sue’s goal was to be able to walk a longer distance without her wheelchair, and she really worked hard to be able to reach that goal at the Step Out for Stroke. To see Sue’s confidence increase over the time I’ve known her, has been extremely rewarding. Sue is a real inspiration and seeing her challenge herself at Step out for Stroke is testament to how far she has come.”
