An exhibition based in a Catford prefab home is facing a race against time to raise the £15,000 needed to keep it open.

The exhibition, on Catford’s Excalibur estate, has launched an online Kickstarter campaign to remain open to the public while it tries to secure permanent funding.

A deadline for donations closes on Tuesday (September 23) and, without the money, the museum may have to close as it awaits the outcome of funding applications.

It was originally opened in March for what was supposed to be one month but its success and popularity led to it carrying on.

Supporters are now in the early stages of discussions with Lewisham Council about how best to secure funding to keep the exhibition open for the next couple of years.

Photographer Elisabeth Blanchet, who set it up, said: "Our main challenge is to keep the Prefab Museum open for as long as we can, but particularly from the end of September until early 2015. And of course one of the main risks is that we don’t manage to reach our fundraising targets."

She added: "We now have the possibility until 2017 but there are many challenges facing us including how to support the museum from now until then."

The Excalibur estate is made up of prefab houses, many of which are due to be demolished. It is the largest remaining estate of post-war prefabs in Britain and six of the 187 buildings on the estate are Grade II listed.

The exhibition is made up of photos and memorabilia, and shows the work of 17 artists.

Ms Blanchet said: "The exhibition shows a unique part of the area. There are always residents coming in and out. It gives a sense of community."

There are a variety of incentives to give money, from tea towels to museum membership, depending on how much is donated.

The exhibition, at 17 Meliot Road, can be visited as part of Open House weekend. You can pledge money to the cause on the Kickstarter page here.
