A cheese-loving, overweight Jack Russell cross called Gromit has found a new owner in Sidcup after spending six months in a dog’s home.

After starring in the ITV show, Paul O’Grady: For the Love of Dogs, earlier this month, Carrie Postans, of Sidcup High Street, fell in love with the pooch’s cheesy smile.

The 35-year-old visited Gromit at the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home site in Brands Hatch and decided to take the little Wensleydale addict home with her.

When he arrived at the home six months ago he weighed 14lbs - twice as heavy as he should have been.

Luckily Ms Postans is helping to get him back into shape.

She said: "He’s completely taken over the house since we’ve got him home and you wouldn’t recognise him from the TV show - he’s absolutely full of beans, running around the park, playing with the other dogs.

"Gromit is such a happy little dog. He’s absolutely brilliant."

'Your cheese days are over'

Presenter Paul O’Grady had stern words for Gromit when he featured on the show on September 4 for his addiction to Wensleydale.

He said: "This cheese business has got to stop, I started on Philly, and then progressed to cheddar and then the hard stuff, that blue stinky stuff from France.

"I’ve been there. I remember when I was on three rolls of Camembert a day.

"Things were bleak, I never went out the house, I didn’t even get dressed.

"You hear me - no more cheese.  Your cheese days are over."

Battersea veterinary director Shaun Opperman said: "People sometimes think they are being kind by giving their dog lots of treats.

"But being overweight has the same health repercussions for dogs as for humans.

"We’re so pleased to see Gromit looking fitter, healthier and happily settled into a loving home."
