A Greenwich grandfather who raised £350,000 towards a physiotherapy centre for children with mobility problems has been announced as a regional winner and finalist in this year’s Pride of Britain Awards.

Danny Catchesides from Eltham, founded a charity to raise funds for a new centre after learning his grandson Freddie has quadriplegic cerebral palsy.

Freddie needs intensive treatment with specialist equipment but his nearest centre is in Oxford, two-and-a-half hours away by car.

Mr Catchsides’ efforts have raised £350,000 in just three years and his charity – the Freddie Farmer Foundation, is in the process of setting up a new Bromley based centre that will help 100 children every year.

Mr Catchsides, who was announced as a regional winner on ITV News London Friday evening, is now one of 17 winners making up the finalists for the London ceremony in October.

This year’s Pride of Britain Awards will be packed with breathtaking stories of heroism and courage, uplifting moments and hilarious surprises, where a host of well-known faces pay tribute to the nation's unsung heroes.

Peter Willis, founder of the Pride of Britain Awards, said: “Many congratulations to Danny on his achievement. We’re delighted he will join us at the Pride of Britain Awards. It’s going to be a night to remember.”
