A newly refurbished 19th century pub has received a prize for its blooming efforts in the garden.

The Echo in Old Road East was established in 1899 and was taken over by new managers, Trudy and Danny Merrison in March.

Their achievements in brightening up the building and the garden have meant the pub’s parent company, Enterprise Inns, recently recognised the The Echo in the Pubs in Bloom competition.

The Merrisens installed a completely new garden, with a new play area including a large furnished playhouse and soft play equipment.

There is also an artificial lawn with ample seating, surrounded by decking with several planters for colour.

Trudy Merrison said "We’re delighted to be recognised for our work so far, but there is so much more we are doing - from entertainment including some of the best bands and singers in the region, to themed events; such as our forthcoming prestige vodka evenings."

Enterprise Inns is the UK’s largest pub chain with more than 5,500 pubs.

The Southern Region of Pubs in Bloom was contested by nearly 1,300 pubs.
