Dartford Council's leader has spoken out about proposed changes to Central Library.

Kent County Council (KCC) has extended its consultation on how the building in Market Street should be refurbished until September 21.

Councillor Jeremy Kite is concerned about changes to the library and is urging residents to put forward their views.

He said: "It’s great KCC want to invest in our library but I think many will share the view that some of the changes proposed are unsympathetic and inappropriate for a building of this age and style.

"We managed to get a previous planning application withdrawn because the library service simply hadn’t consulted users about it and at least they are now talking to local people.

"I know libraries must adapt to meet the challenges of the internet, ebooks and digital distribution but this library is one of only two in the world built in this particular style and we should not allow its ambience to be disturbed without great care."

The consultation has been extended for two weeks until September 21.
