Scouts from Bromley and Bexley have been working with former street children in Kenya.

Seventeen young people are currently (Aug 27) spending 18 days in the coastal county of Siaya as part of an international trip.

The expedition aims to help past street kids "get their lives back", and Scouts are involved in projects such as first aid training, decorating classrooms in schools, and sports coaching.

Andrea Yanez-Cunningham, 17, from the 7th Orpington Explorers, said she has been "humbled" by the experience.

She said: "When I signed up for the expedition to Kenya, I thought I was signing up for an easy time but the reality of the experience we are having out here is so much more.

"We have been given the chance to teach and interact with people from all backgrounds, some which make you laugh and some which will make you cry.

"We’ve worked with street kids to government officials, and the invitations and reactions we have received consequently are humbling, exciting and leave you with the feeling that you really have changed someone’s life in a way that will be remembered and appreciated, for a very long time."

Expedition leader Hannah Kentish said the adventure has been really positive and is thankful for the opportunity.

She said: "This expedition to Kenya has been emotional but I really feel like I’ve made a difference within the local community here.

"This expedition has made a huge impact on not only the local children but also on our Scouts."
