A brand new £8,554 children’s adventure playground has been funded by News Shopper’s parent company Gannett .

The play area, at Wide Horizons Environment Centre in Eltham, provides adventures for children aged two to 11 and includes pond-dipping, orienteering and shelter building.

The adventure playground which also has a wobbly bridge, springy balance boards and tube phones, has already been enjoyed by children from St Stephen’s primary school in Deptford who gave their feedback on the playground.

One pupil said: “I really liked the playground because it had things that made me feel energetic, especially the bouncy one [springy balance boards] and the bridges.”

Wide Horizons provides high-quality, affordable adventures for more than 34,000 children and young people each year and work with local schools to provide every child with the opportunity to experience adventures as part of their education and development.

Wide Horizons’ chief executive, Alex Brooks-Johnson, said: “Many of the children that we work with don’t have access to much outdoor space, and often their playgrounds will be very urban – built out of concrete and tarmac.

“This adventure play area allows children to experience creative, adventurous play and enjoy being outdoors. Even some of our staff insisted on ‘testing’ the play area when it was finished.”

The playground, built by Monkey Do in April, was made entirely from naturally sourced materials.
