An elderly man in his 70s has died after being hit by a van in Northfleet.

The man was hit by a white Hyundai van at around 7.55am this morning (August 13) and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man's next of kin have been informed.

The driver of the van was taken to hospital with injuries thought to be minor.

News Shopper:

Natasha Fry, aged 26 who own Nicksons The Snack Shack on Perry Street told News Shopper that she witnessed the aftermath of the incident.

She said: "We were in the back and heard a lot of commotion so came out and the police were here within minutes.

"It looked like the van had reversed into him."

Tania Jarvis, aged 34, manageress at Scarlett Hair and Design on Perry Street added: "It's very sad - I feel sorry for the driver as well, I can't imagine what he's going through.

"It happens down here a lot. People drive very fast and people don't use the pedestrian crossings to get across the road."

News Shopper:

A spokesman for South East Coast Ambulance said: "We sent two ambulance crews to the scene.

"Sadly one person was pronounced and another was taken to Darrent Valley hospital."

Perry Street was closed in both directions until 1pm while officers from the Serious Collision Investigation Unit carried out an investigation.

Witnesses to the collision or anyone who saw the pedestrian or vehicle prior to the collision are urged to contact the Kent Police Serious Collision Investigation Unit by calling 01622 798538.
