A fun day in Greenhithe began with a parade to mark the centenary of the start of the First World War.

The procession started at midday in Ingress Park Avenue and featured pipers and drummers.

It was followed by the official opening of the fun day by Mayor of Swanscombe and Greenhithe Town Council Councillor Sue Butterfill.

The day featured circus skills workshops, a bouncy castle, kangaroo jumps, ice cream stalls, a barbecue and refreshments.

There was dancing and drama by the Walk Tall charity and the Robyn Dance Academy. Peppa Pig and Fireman Sam also put in an appearance.

Organiser Coun Butterfill said: “It’s not every day you get a hurricane at a family fun day.

“People called to check if it was still going on and I said, ‘a hundred years ago, we wouldn’t have let rain put us off so it will be business as usual’. And it was.

“It was a really lovely day and we had around 2,000 people come along.

“The drummers and pipers put their macs on and did a fantastic job and Kent Police were a great help.”
