Greenwich has been announced as among the top 10 on the Transport for London’s list of biggest reductions in road casualties.

The borough, which has seen some of the biggest road casualties in the UK in the past year, has recently established a dedicated road safety team who have introduced a number of measures to improve road safety in the area including rolling out 20mph zones and introducing new safety schemes.

There were a total of 28 people killed or seriously injured on Greenwich’s roads in 2013, compared with 73 the previous year.

Greenwich Cabinet member for regeneration and transport Councillor Danny Thorpe, said: “While we’re really pleased to see such massive improvements in the numbers of people seriously hurt on our roads, the aim is to do everything we can to prevent any serious incidents occurring.

“It’s pleasing to see that many of the road safety measures we have put in place have had such a positive impact. There are so many different factors that might contribute to a road accident but we continue to do everything we can to keep getting the numbers down and to make our streets as safe as possible.”
