Two men from Penge and Lewisham have been jailed after attempting to import a million pounds worth of cocaine into the UK, disguised as tins of Jamaican Pride Callaloo.

Derek Giles, 56, of Anerley Road, Penge, was jailed for seven years, and Lawrence French, 57, of Eddystone Road, Lewisham, was sentenced to four years and four months.

Both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to import Class A controlled drugs at Kingston Crown Court last Friday (July 18).

The pair were part of a gang of seven caught after a joint investigation by officers from the Met Police, the National Crime Agency at Gatwick and Titan, the north west regional organised crime unit.

Detective Inspector Jerry Troon, from the Met Police, said: "Those involved have had a direct link with the supply to mid-level dealers within London and Merseyside and I would like to pay tribute to my colleagues whose fine work led to their incarceration.

"This investigation shows that we will seek anyone actively involved in the drugs trade and use all the powers available to us to combat it.

“The message is clear - if you deal in drugs we will find you, we will arrest you and you will be put in front of the courts to face the consequences of your actions."
