A teenager who died after being hit by a lorry near a Catford pedestrian crossing has been named locally as foreign student Sharon Chen.
Sharon, a 13-year-old from Taiwan, was in the UK for three weeks and was due to fly home next week.
She was on her way to a Bromley summer school when she was hit by a lorry yesterday morning (July 16).
Witnesses spoke of their horror at hearing screams during the incident near the zebra crossing in Brownhill Road.
Emergency services were called to the junction with Stainton Road at around 7.35am but Sharon was pronounced dead at the scene.
The girl's family have been informed and are understood to be making their way to London.
Jacqui Fox from Twin Group, a Lewisham-based company which had organised the girl's stay, said: "Our immediate thoughts are with the friends and family of the deceased and their tragic loss and we are supporting the parents who are currently on route to the UK."
She added: "We are liaising with the group's consular office and our own management team on the ground to provide the utmost care to the rest of the students and their group leaders, including providing trauma counselling.
"We are also working with the local authorities to understand the cause of the accident."
A post-mortem examination was due to take place this afternoon (July 17).
After the accident, the 39-year-old male driver stopped at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
He was bailed until October 17 and Catford Traffic Garage’s serious collision investigation unit are investigating.
Any witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call the police on 020 8285 1574.
