The parents of a teenager who died after taking ecstasy at a rave listened in court as his friends told about the 'bad decision' they made to buy drugs that are believed to have killed him.

But the friends of Daniel Spargo-Mabbs told the trial of Ryan Kirk yesterday they cannot be sure it was Mr Kirk who gave them the MDMA.

Mr Kirk, allegedly gave a group of teenagers 2.5g of the class A drug after they gave him £80 in a deal behind warehouses near the Tesco in Elmers End.

Opening the case for the prosecution Tyrone Silcott said: "The group of young men made a bad decision that evening, they decided to get themselves some ecstasy.

"You will hear that in the backdrop of this deal that one of these young men died as a result of taking that ecstasy.

"You are here to deliberate on one question only - whether or not this defendant, this young man, was the person who delivered those drugs on January 17 and whether he had supplied Class A and Class B drugs in the past."

Giving evidence from behind a screen one of the witnesses said he had bought drugs off a drug dealer he knew as Shampz several times in the past year.

He said Shampz has sometimes met him with drugs in the area near the Arena tram stop but sometimes sent other people.

On the night of January 17 the group were given the drugs by a tall thin ‘scruffy’ man on a mountain bike.

He cycled up and gave them three bags of white powder in small plastic bags decorated with blue stars.

Most of the group took their ecstasy by putting it in water bottles and drank it while travelling to the rave in Hayes, west London, on January 17.

16-year-old Daniel, Rymer Road, Croydon, waited until he got inside the venue, a disused cotton factory and drank his share, about half a gram, in his 500ml bottle of water all at once, Isleworth Crown Court heard.

In a witness statement read to the court, another member of the group, said: "I think he drank all his bottle in one once we got into the rave.

"After Dan drank his bottle he took off his shirt.

"He was talking a lot more than he usually does, what he was saying did make sense and he was talking a lot about his girlfriend.

"After a while we started dancing."

Daniel lost consciousness hours later and was taken to Hilligdon Hospital at about 4am on the Sunday morning and he died in hospital on January 20.

Since his death parents Fiona and Tim Spargo-Mabbs have launched a charity in his name.

They now plan to use the Daniel Spargo-Mabbs Foundation to shine a light on the potentially tragic impact of illegal drugs.

Shampz, real name Nicqueel Pitrora, 18, of London Road, Croydon, has pleaded guilty to a charge of being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs.

Kirk, of Puffin Close, Beckenham, Kent, has pleaded not guilty to being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs on January 17.

He has also pleaded not guilty to being concerned in the supply of Class A drugs between January 1 last year and January 16 this year and being concerned in the supply of Class B drugs over the same period.
