UPDATE: Tributes to stabbed Downham man who 'crashed car and died beside vehicle'
A man in his 20s who was stabbed in Downham following a fight, sped off in a car and then crashed it before dying at the scene, has been named locally.
Police were called to Coniston Road at 8.45pm on July 13 following reports of a fight.
Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene and found a man - named locally as a 22-year-old called Afyon Saint-Hilaire - suffering from a stab wound.
According to neighbours, trouble flared outside the McDonald's in Old Bromley Road and the man - believed to live locally - was stabbed. Some people also reported hearing gunshots.
He then drove up Coniston Road and hit a gravel track, crashing his vehicle before dying at the scene.
Jake Lomas, 40, who lives in nearby Ullswater Close, said: "During the World Cup final we heard a loud crash - this guy had crashed his car.
"He got out of his car and collapsed and died.
"We walked up the road to see what had happened and by that time all the police had arrived.
"The guy's family turned up as well, somehow they knew about it, so it got quite hysterical."
One woman, who did not want to be named, said: "I was sitting watching TV when all of a sudden, it will stay with me for the rest of my life, there was a scream.
"It was a young man and he was screaming for help and also using a lot of invective language.
"It was as though he'd completely lost the plot."
She said: "Neighbours got him out of the car and started trying to help him.
"Much, much later on his mother turned up. She kept saying: "My son, my son."
The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 9.43pm.
Tributes have been paid to the victim online. One Twitter user wrote: "Rip to my bro love you and missing you already. So much tears coming out of my eyes right now so upset."
Another friend wrote: "Bruv I'm still waiting for you to ring me and tell me you're laying low making P and its a joke.. I'll be mad at you but happy you're alive.
"You know like when I first heard the news I had to ring your phone.. Heart sunk when it went to voicemail."
And another pal wrote: "No words can describe the way I'm feeling right now. Miss you and love so much afy."
Today, the area around McDonald's was cordoned off, along with several parts of Coniston Road where two forensic tents were also set up.
Police believe they know the man's identity but await formal identification.
No arrests have been made and enquiries by the Met's homicide and major crime command are ongoing.
