UPDATE: Tributes to stabbed Downham man who 'crashed car and died beside vehicle'

News Shopper: The victim has been named locally as Afyon The victim has been named locally as Afyon

A man in his 20s who was stabbed in Downham following a fight, sped off in a car and then crashed it before dying at the scene, has been named locally.

Police were called to Coniston Road at 8.45pm on July 13 following reports of a fight.

News Shopper:

Officers and the London Ambulance Service attended the scene and found a man - named locally as a 22-year-old called Afyon Saint-Hilaire - suffering from a stab wound.

According to neighbours, trouble flared outside the McDonald's in Old Bromley Road and the man - believed to live locally - was stabbed. Some people also reported hearing gunshots.

He then drove up Coniston Road and hit a gravel track, crashing his vehicle before dying at the scene.

Jake Lomas, 40, who lives in nearby Ullswater Close, said: "During the World Cup final we heard a loud crash - this guy had crashed his car.

"He got out of his car and collapsed and died.

"We walked up the road to see what had happened and by that time all the police had arrived.

"The guy's family turned up as well, somehow they knew about it, so it got quite hysterical."

News Shopper:

One woman, who did not want to be named, said: "I was sitting watching TV when all of a sudden, it will stay with me for the rest of my life, there was a scream.

"It was a young man and he was screaming for help and also using a lot of invective language.

"It was as though he'd completely lost the plot."

She said: "Neighbours got him out of the car and started trying to help him.

"Much, much later on his mother turned up. She kept saying: "My son, my son."

The man was pronounced dead at the scene at 9.43pm.

Tributes have been paid to the victim online. One Twitter user wrote: "Rip to my bro love you and missing you already. So much tears coming out of my eyes right now so upset."

Another friend wrote: "Bruv I'm still waiting for you to ring me and tell me you're laying low making P and its a joke.. I'll be mad at you but happy you're alive.

"You know like when I first heard the news I had to ring your phone.. Heart sunk when it went to voicemail."

News Shopper:

And another pal wrote: "No words can describe the way I'm feeling right now. Miss you and love so much afy."

Today, the area around McDonald's was cordoned off, along with several parts of Coniston Road where two forensic tents were also set up.

Police believe they know the man's identity but await formal identification.

No arrests have been made and enquiries by the Met's homicide and major crime command are ongoing.

The sooner its life for carrying a knife the better.

Who cares what caused this at the end of the day the wimp who chose to take a knife out with him because he is such an insecure pathetic individual is to blame.

The sooner these losers wake up and realise there is more to the world than trying to get respect and status from being a loser who carrys a knife the better.

You think you are the big tough guy with a knife then get into the army and see if you can even pass selection.

A pathetic bunch of oxygen stealers these knife carrying idiots.

Stop calling them men in newspaper articles as they quite clearly arent.

Reall men dont need to carry knives for protection.

I feel sorry for anyone who falls victim of todays knife crime and obviously for the family and friends they leave behind. Unfortunately you can get killed just for looking at someone the wrong way these days. I recently witnessed a man in the middle of Bromley drag a guy out of his car just for cutting him up at the traffic lights its crazy!!!!

kstiles - why pull the racist card 'because he's black we think it has something to do with drugs' ??? if you know him so much maybe you should be talking to the police instead of writing vile comments on here I’m sure it would be more creative.

Let the Police do their investigations i'm sure we will hear soon enough why this poor guy lost his life.

I totally agree with you Kentlad in sending sympathies to the family. No one should lose their child to knives/guns or any other kind of weapons and hopefully the police will resolve the matter soon, and I also asked the same question of kstiles about playing the race card in the earlier deleted batch of comments. I wouldn't mind but when I read the article first go off, there was no mention of the victims name nor any photo of him, so for all intents and purposes we could have been talking about anyone idiot who drug deals and there seem to be plenty these days. This kstiles obviously has a chip on their shoulder otherwise why make such a comment? or was it their way of stirring more trouble? The grammar certainly left a lot to be desired, and could do with some brushing up on English lessons to improve it if they want to be taken seriously that is.

Lots of people will assume it was drug related because the stretch of road where the incident happened is known for drug dealing most people who know the area will tell anyone this so first thoughts would be drugs in all fairness. I would like to think he gained enough money through hard work running his family property portfolio to have been involved in any drugs.

From what the media have written about him he came from a wealthy family and therefore he could have been a target for muggers or even a carjacking which could explain why he had a stab wound to the leg (car door being opened) and then drove off and crashed.

You may have been sticking up for the family which I don't doubt for one second, but it was your comment.........."Ju
st cos he's black!" which got the backs up of many on here. We had no idea at the time (well I didn't) who he was as no mention was made, so why did you have to make that crass and accusing comment?
Also, nobody mentioned anything about his mother (or family) not caring enough to come sooner to his aid, purely because we mostly guessed that she knew nothing about it until notified by police or others, so what is your purpose behind that comment.
I wont comment any more on this thread, but please note: I do and have already, sent my condolences to his mother and family.
Just wish people would use a bit of savvy in this day and age, and this goes out to the sh1te that was using a knife, If you must settle an argument, prove a point or (heaven forbid)mug or burgle someone! use if you REALLY REALLY HAVE TO - fists (which again, goes against the grain), leave out the guns and knives............it aint needed, it aint big,
