You’ve just arrived in Charlton and you have an hour to spare, where should you go and what should you see?

Vibe’s Jennifer Igiri picks some of the hot spots.

Our list is very much a snapshot and not definitive – if there’s somewhere we should have included, let us know in the comments below.

Maryon Wilson Park (animal reserve)

News Shopper:

Being in the midst of the park is like being in the middle of the countryside; the surroundings are so serene that you forget where you are. Besides the view the main attraction is the animal reserve, which is filled with beautiful farm animals, from horses to peacocks. The park is the perfect location for a bit of R&R, as well as some ‘natural’ entertainment.

Anchor and Hope pub

News Shopper:

Grab a bite to eat, something to drink and enjoy the hopeful atmosphere in and around this cozy pub. As you step outside and look across the Thames, you almost feel like you’re at the seaside. If you feel like having a stroll, the road just outside the pub leads to either a green-chain walk, or the Thames barrier.

St Luke's Church

News Shopper:

Across the road from Charlton House you'll find St Luke's Church, which is where Spencer Perceval, the only assassinated British Prime Minister, was buried.

Charlton House

News Shopper:

Observe a bit of British culture in this historic house that’s over 400 years old. There are weekly events going on in the House and the Library (which is right next door). The building is surrounded by some beautiful gardens, and has a nice café inside. Lovely!

Charlton Lido

News Shopper:

The newly refurbished activities centre has something for you, whether you prefer swimming, tennis, group exercise or gym facilities.  There’s an over 60s club, open air group cycle studio, 50m heated outdoor pool and a cafeteria. They offer a range of different ways to get involved, from one day passes to annual memberships. Good healthy fun.
